Types Of Denture Adhesives

Denture adhesives are a useful way of fixing a loose or slipping denture back into position. They are a low cost way of dealing with this problem and are easy to use.

If you decide to use a denture adhesive the next question is: which type should you use?

There are three categories of denture adhesives which include:

  • Paste adhesives
  • Powder adhesives
  • Strip adhesives

Each of these categories is discussed in greater detail within this guide. Visit any of these sections in turn to find out more about a particular variety.

Most effective denture adhesive

Which is more effective? If by that you mean which denture adhesive fixes a denture in place for longer then you will find that this is influenced by various factors.

Dentures are easier to secure in the upper part of the mouth as compared to the lower. The main reasons for that are a bigger surface area and fewer muscle movements. Plus there is natural suction in the top part of the mouth which helps to keep the upper denture in place.

This is how dentures work.

A set of dentures is designed to mimic the appearance and behaviour of your natural teeth. They are held in place by means of suction from your gums provide a natural looking replacement for your teeth.

But some people experience problems with them which include slipping out of position. The lower denture causes this problem as it covers a smaller surface area where there is less suction than the upper mouth.

The lower denture has to sit between your teeth and tongue which can cause it move around and feel less secure. Plus it is easy for food particles to become trapped underneath the plate or for drinks especially fizzy drinks to rinse away the adhesive.

You may have to test a couple of types of adhesive “for example a paste version and then a powder to determine which one suits you best.
